The overfitted brain: Dreams evolved to assist generalization

چکیده
Dreaming remains a mystery to neuroscience. While various hypotheses of why brains evolved nightly dreaming have been put forward, many these are contradicted by the sparse, hallucinatory, and narrative nature dreams, that seems lack any particular function. Recently, research on artificial neural networks has shown during learning, such face ubiquitous problem: overfitting dataset, which leads failures in generalization therefore performance novel datasets. Notably, techniques researchers employ rescue overfitted generally involve sampling from an out-of-distribution or randomized dataset. The brain hypothesis is organisms similarly challenge fitting too well their daily distribution stimuli, causing poor generalization. By hallucinating sensory stimulation every night, able generalizability its perceptual cognitive abilities increase task performance. Understanding biological function sleep advanced considerably past decade. However, no equivalent understanding dreams emerged. Contemporary neuroscientific theories often view as epiphenomena, proposals for phenomenology themselves. Now, recent advent deep (DNNs) finally provided conceptual framework within understand dreams. all DNNs issue they learn, when one dataset increases but network's fails generalize (often measured divergence training versus testing datasets). This problem solved modelers via “noise injections” form noisy corrupted inputs. goal this paper argue faces similar combat brain's learning. Beyond Dreams: Do Sleep-Related Movements Contribute to Brain Development?
Conventional wisdom has long held that the twitches of sleeping infants and adults are by-products of a dreaming brain. With the discovery of active (or REM) sleep in the 1950s and the recognition soon thereafter that active sleep is characterized by inhibition of motor outflow, researchers elaborated on conventional wisdom and concluded that sleep-related twitches are epiphenomena that result ...
متن کاملUsability Issues in Software to Assist People with Brain Injuries
The problems of producing a software system to assist in the rehabilitation of people who have suffered serious traumatic brain injuries are described. The challenges of ensuring a high level of usability by incorporating the best of graphic and HCI design into a well established software engineering methodology are discussed. The resulting suite of programs is now in use at a rehabilitation ho...

متن کاملEvolved Reversible Cascades Realized on the CAM-Brain Machine
This paper presents a new approach to reversible cascade evolution based on a 3D cellular automaton. As a research platform we used the ATR’s CAMBrain Machine (CBM). Reversible circuits are investigated because they are expected to dissipate much less energy than their irreversible counterparts. One day they will be implemented as nano-scale 3-dimensional chips. A circuit is reversible if the n...
